Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

tinnitus retraining therapy « home

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) uses a combination of low level, sound therapy along with personal counseling to achieve, “HABITUATION” of tinnitus. Habituation is the process in which the patient is no longer aware of their tinnitus, except when they focus their attention on it, and even then the tinnitus is no longer annoying or bothersome.

Hyperacusis is a decreased tolerance of sound which can become a serious problem. Some patients experience Hyperacusis without tinnitus. Some patients experience Hyperacusis in addition to tinnitus. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy can restore totally or partially the normal level of sensitivity to sound.

During the evaluation process your Tinnitus Specialist evaluates your case history, reviews and/or conducts audiological testing and evaluates other factors, which position you into one of five specific categories within the TRT protocol. Only after the evaluation process can a on-going specific recommendation be made.

The specialist at Rochester Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic has been trained personally by Dr. Pawel Jastreboff in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy and adheres to these principals, protocols and treatment guidelines.

How to get started:

The first step in seeking help for Tinnitus and/or Hyperacusis is to call our office located in the Audibel Hearing Center building at 507-281-8989. We will mail you a packet of information and preliminary questionnaires; these are import to prepare the specialist for you initial consultation. When you receive them, please fill out all sheets and return them to the clinic. Once the specialist has reviewed the packet, he will call you to set up the first appointment.

Your first appointment at the Rochester Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic will be 90-120 minutes. If you have had your hearing evaluated by an audiologist, we ask that you bring a copy of those results to your appointment. If this has not been done, we will be happy to do that testing for you. The remainder of the appointment involves a detailed case history about you, your Tinnitus/Hyperacusis, and how it affects your quality of life. You will have an opportunity to experience several treatment options and upon appointment completion will receive specific recommendations for treatment options. The cost for this appointment is $325.00 with payment requested at time of service.
